More Imam Muda

Apparently after several weeks of non-elimination in the beginning (cos they wanted to give some of the contestants chances to improve themselves), they have been doing double eliminations so that they would have a final two in time for the finale next week. I can't wait to find out who wins.

The first episode started with them preparing (cleaning and wrapping up) unclaimed bodies for their last rites, which was a little shocking, admittedly. For the odd non-Muslim Malaysian viewer (I would be one such individual) most of the show at this point would be a little boring because there's really little to no in-fighting amongst the contestants, which is a draw for the other reality shows. Everyone is so nice, polite and supportive of each other (they even attended one guy's wedding, which was briefly featured on the show). The Q&A sessions during judging are also a little dull because while their answers might have merit, but the way their answers are presented reminded me of the coaching we got  for the SPM Moral Studies exam, to answer the questions all long-winded and stiff. 

With all the gross stuff was behind them and it's now down to them doing acts of decency like visiting orphanages and old folks' homes. Which is why I find myself skipping three quarters of the show and just watch the ending.

As a Malaysian I COULD watch the show without resorting to the English subtitles, but I leave them on anyway because they're better than most of the bad subtitling I've seen in Malaysia. I think later episodes posted on YouTube have English subtitles now, so it's not too bad.

Random observation: What is with this show and facial hair? Almost everyone has a beard of some sort at the very least on the show. Is it a requirement of religious officials that I was never aware of?

The NPR piece is worth listening to (and there's also a transcript of the audio segment at the link) - I can't believe Robert Siegel got the pronunciation of the show down. Which is not saying much if he has indeed been watching a little of the show.

Watching - The Kilborn File

So I've been watching clips (or full episodes, really) of The Kilborn File on YouTube the last day or two - not every single episode, just the guests that I want to see and whatever's available.

I've never seen the guy when he hosted both The Daily Show and The Late Late Show back in the day because I was too young and there wasn't the technology to watch it from the other side of the planet, so I'm not one to judge.

I also can't say I'm a fan of the guy, but he strikes me (a little) of Dane Cook's character in Good Luck Chuck - where his replacements make a better job of the shows he's left than he did when he was there. Relatively, anyway.

What I like about The Kilborn File so far is that the humour is not as political as the current incarnation of The Daily Show, but I don't get most of the segments, like 5 Questions and the Power Panel. Maybe it's just me.

Much as I am a fan of talk shows, but The Kilborn File? Erm, not really.

He's only getting a six week trial run and in several markets, so I'm not sure whether he'll be picked up for fall.

Imam Muda

It's sad that I have to find out about Imam Muda from the foreign press when I could have tuned into the Astro Oasis (Channel 106; the Muslim channel, or the VERY Muslim-y Hallmark Channel). But there's only so much TV that one can watch in a week. Even then, I keep forgetting to tune in.

When I finally did remember to tune in, it was the episode where they were tested on what is halal and haram in terms of animal slaughtering. I now know the motions of the neck slice (in theory), but not the prayer that goes with it. Somehow knowing that the McDs here is halal is comforting - I don't think I'll find anything unsavoury in my McNuggets anytime soon.

Imam Muda basically a "reality" talent show for to find the ultimate "young religious leader" out of the 10 male contestants of varying backgrounds. They're schooled and tested on both their skills and knowledge on a weekly basis. There's also the 5 minute capsule shows where the lessons and such are broadcasted, but I personally can't be bothered, I just stick to the main show, which is when the eliminations are done. The winner gets a pilgrimage trip, car, etc and a job in one of mosques in KL.

I'm really surprised that no one's come up with this sooner (not the reality show genre, but the idea of Muslim leaders). The one thing I like is that there's NO PUBLIC VOTE (according to the BBC News piece on the show).

As a non-Muslim watching, I thought it's engaging enough. Learnt some things. Some of the racists I know could stand to learn a thing or two. 

I also just found out that you can watch the show on YouTube - just plug in the name of the show in the search bar. I think some of the later episodes come with English subtitles as well, which is handy because the show is in Malay; and I need help with some of the regional dialects and some of the religious terms I was not familiar with.

Will Hugh Laurie finally win an Emmy? Hmm...

Hugh Laurie was again nominated for an Emmy for being Dr House. Yay for him.

Then I saw the other nominees in the same category and I'm like, uh-oh... mostly because the other 4 are on cable and cable shows usually sweep these things up. The only other network show is Lost - ick.

Here's what I think about the other nominees in the same category.

1. Jon Hamm - Won't win, but he'll be nominated again.
2. Kyle Chandler  (Friday Night Lights) - another show I don't give a shit about because it's about American football. There has been precedence of first nomination wins at the Emmys, but poor Hugh's been nominated so many times and still nothing, so maybe not. Are they cancelling Friday Night Lights? Is that why the show's getting mentioned?
3. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) - he'll be nominated again, unless his character finally dies and the show is over....Hasn't he won before? Not likely to win THIS time.
4. Michael C. Hall (Dexter) - since he's cured of his lymphoma, he probably won't win; he'll be nominated again.
5. Matthew Fox (Lost) - Most likely to win because Lost is over and he's been quoted that he's "done with television" - they might give him the Emmy to lure him back in.

So in sum, Hugh Laurie has about 1/3 chance of winning an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Maybe. At the very least, it's between him and Matthew Fox.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

Who's voting for this again? If I'm not wrong I don't think it's the public... so it's up to those voters.

No more Stella...

More CSI franchise departure news - After six years, Melina Kanakaredes is leaving CSI:NY. That one I did not see coming. Really.

Sure, they say she's "moving on", but really, if I had that much shit happen to my character on the show (kill an ex-boyfriend in self-defense in a hostage situation, the AIDS scare, house fire, getting attacked by various people, yada yada)... yeah sure, "moving on". I have to say it, she's like the New York equivalent of Nick Stokes in terms of having shit happen to her in the course of the show.

I'm not a hater, but I never exactly MINDED her presence on the show, either.

Like every other cast member departure, I just want to see how she gets written off the show, or if there's a Stella replacement on the show like Laurence Fishburne on CSI.

Work of Art: The Next Great Artist

Been catching up on the new Bravo reality competition show, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist because I'm a sucker that way. And I've also already seen both Shear Genius and Top Design, so what the hey - I'm about as conversant about art as I am about hair styling or interior design :P

In the Bravo trend of having non-American born hosts, this show is hosted by China Chow, another woman I'm not familiar with and the last time I looked, is not American (born). I don't even want to get started on the name, so I will resist the urge. Her credentials for being both the host and judge was that she "grew up around art". Oh-kay.

At least the rest of the judging panel are FROM the art world - gallery owner, gallerist (whatever that means) and art critic. And also the Tim Gunn-like guru figure, Simon de Pury.

I think the only reason why they bother green lighting the show is because Sarah Jessica Parker's an executive producer. She made an appearance once in the premiere for the slight ratings boost. Let's start a tally of the appearances.

China's "axe phrase": "Your work of art didn't work for us" - ouch. It's a bit cheesy, that's all I got. But it's not like the rest of the elimination spiel was any better.

I'm not sure how they're gonna pick the "best" artist in this beaten-to-death format, but I'll be watching to see how they do it. I'm not even sure if they'll finish the season to get picked up for another. Oh well.

Cibrian no more on CSI: Miami

Word is that Eddie Cibrian's character on CSI: Miami is going to be killed off next season now that Adam Rodriguez is coming back after Ugly Betty got canned.

All I have to say is: Wow, that did not take long.

If Cibrian was brought in to replace Rodriguez, so who is Omar Miller replacing on the show? Or are they trying to diversify?

Not that I was particularly attached to his character anyway, but I do want to see how they write him off the show then.

So many cancellations, but so many new shows too

News of show cancellations have been aplenty for the last few days - most of which I never saw to get emotionally attached to anyway - but otherwise good riddance :P

• Law & Order (the original one - it's been 20 years), 
• Heroes (meh - about time), 
• Mercy (which I never got into), 
• The Wanda Sykes Show
• Ugly Betty (like Heroes, I stopped after the first season)

Anyway, here's to another year of new shows that'll stick around.

Worst-Case Scenario with Bear Grylls

Saw the first hour of the Discovery Channel's Worst-Case Scenario with Bear Grylls (yes, that's what they're calling it). LOVE the title screen.

First impression: Very serious, very dramatic - first episode kicked off with what to do in case of a car accident. Woah. It's not that far from Man vs Wild, it's basically him in the urban jungle.

I'm amazed how he can narrate his way through all this; excellent projection :P

I wonder how much is the man's insurance premiums or whether he's insured AT ALL, with all the stuff that he does on screen. I also pity the camera person tailing him in these situations - that guy's insurance premiums can't be that cheap, either.

I don't think half hour episodes are enough, they should make it an hour. 

Shear Genius

Been watching the third season of Shear Genius for no reason but just because I wanted to see for myself the changes in host, mentor and permanent judge has done. 

In continuing the Bravo trend of getting non-American models to host their reality competition shows, they got McConaughey's baby mama Camila Alves as host, which I don't really get but also don't really care. The accent I could live with. Has the "Hair is important" line her thing, or has it been around since the beginning?

They even got a different mentor for the contestants, which I'm okay with because Rene's "hi hi" greeting and speech impediment was annoying.

I've also been wondering when were they gonna get Jonathan Antin on as permanent judge on the show, it was like when Janice Dickinson was on ANTM - fun to watch them give contestants a piece of their minds, as long as it wasn't YOU.

Conan going to TBS in November

So CoCo is moving to cable, which is where his material should be all the while anyway. I would only hope that he won't hold back his shit because he's no longer on network TV. I mean, Bill Maher's doing really well on HBO since he got canned from his network job way back when.

He's George Lopez's lead in come November on TBS. Of course Lopez is happy, he's so happy he's now LoCo for the arrangement. 

As long as I can see clips of both shows on the TBS website with non of the geographic restriction nonsense, I'm okay with anything. Let's see what happens in November.

If I was Conan's guest coordinators (or the job title related with guest bookings), I wouldn't get Will Ferrell anywhere near the show for the first few months.

If Charlie Sheen doesn't have his contract renewed for Two and a Half Men, then what would the show be called? One and a Half Men? Two Men? Seriously though - how is the show gonna move  without Charlie Sheen?

Even if it does get cancelled because there's no more Charlie Sheen, I wouldn't miss it because I washed my hands of the half-hour sitcoms ages ago.

Criminal Minds spinoff - WTF

When I first heard the news that there was going to be a spinoff for Criminal Minds way back when (a couple of months tops), I was like, are they kidding me? It's not enough that they're the murder network, but they want to be the network of spinoffs as well? Seriously?!

On the Tiffany Network, there is CSI with both CSI: Miami and CSI: NY spinoffs; NCIS (already a spinoff itself from JAG) now has NCIS: LA. A Criminal Minds spinoff is as about as necessary as Steve Wozniak needs more money. I think the only reason why they're going through with it is because they have Forest Whitaker in the lead role, and they can't toss him with the original cast without overwhelming them*. Maybe they want another black guy in a leading role on TV... anyway, wouldn't mind watching the back door pilot for this.

I like Criminal Minds as it is, and I'm kinda tired of the ensemble cast procedural drama. I know I don't have to watch it, but the curiousity will just kill me if I don't.

I hope they came up with a better name for this spinoff than they did for NCIS: LA.

I'll be darned if a Mentalist spinoff is happening as it's one of those shows which you can't squeeze a spinoff out of, but you'll never know.

* Besides, who needs one more wonky eyed older man on the BAU?

My E! guilty pleasure - Giuliana & Bill

While I have to admit that E!'s reality programming is not as bad as MTV's, but that might have more to do with viewer demographics than the quality of said programming. I never understood Laguna Beach, The Hills and the rest of that, but I admit that I enjoy watching Paris Hilton pick a BFF on My New BFF. I know I'm digressing.

Out of the E! reality programming I watch with any regularity (as in: if it's on and I've not seen it before, I'll watch it), it would have to be Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Giuliana & Bill (which technically is on another network, but since Guiliana is an E! employee...). I can't explain why I keep watching these shows, but I guess it fulfills the voyeur in me.

Out of the two, I prefer Giuliana & Bill, even though it's not hard to guess why they would agree to have their marriage out there on TV... which has brought nothing but disastrous results for the wedded lives of minorly famous people, like Nick and Jessica. But I think they might last a teensy bit longer than them, so go them!

I like the show for the most part is that they're not long-time celebrities and comes across as pretty "real" - I mean Bill is only famous because he was Donald Trump's first Apprentice and Giuliana works for E! and with Ryan Seacrest. They're not singers or entertainers in the conventional sense, and I knew things that I otherwise wouldn't know about post hoo-ha wedding.

Worst Case Scenario revamp - yay!

Discovery Channel's gonna do a six part series on the Worst Case Scenario books, which I'm excited about because I love and collect the books (but don't pay retail for them).

What I'm a little more excited about is that Man vs. Wild host Bear Grylls is hosting the show. Not that I watch Man vs. Wild, but that's another story.

I saw the TBS version with Mike Rowe back in the day, and liked it. Pity it didn't last that long.

So I'm gonna reserve my judgment on this one until I actually see it on TV and see what happens.

24 is coming to an end - yay

In case no one else has heard, 24 is calling it quits after eight seasons and nine years later. Thank goodness.

Much as I like the "real time" concept of the show, but I could never get into it because of the sheer un-realness about it - how can a guy like Jack Bauer go through "the longest day of his life" without a meal or toilet break? Yes, I do think of things like that. That, and Kiefer Sutherland doesn't really do it for me; I watch his dad on other (shortlived) shows more than I ever have seen 24.

If nothing else, fans will have the movie to look forward to and fans can watch all 8 seasons in a marathon, which would be how I'd do it if I was actually a fan.

Ugly Americans

So I caught the pilot of the brand new animated Comedy Central series, Ugly Americans.

The show so far is about an alternate reality Manhattan that not only occupied by humans, but also other creatures like demons, zombies and aliens from other planets.

The focus of the show is Mark Lilly, a social worker with the Department of Integration, who's job is to help both humans and "other creatures" adapt to New York life. He's got a zombie roommate and a on-off demon girlfriend/boss.

What I liked about the pilot -

• Hell is another borough in New York. LOL-ed at "La Burnadine". Didn't see the hell version of Eric Ripert, though...
  
• Like the animation style it's got going.
• The lame-ass visual jokes, particularly with the zombie roommate.
  

Not sure how long it'll keep going, but I'll keep watching until it doesn't because it's not South Park.

What I Like about The Good Wife so far

Been watching The Good Wife on Hallmark Channel, which was fine by me cos it's that or I wait to watch the whole season during the summer months.
The show is loosely based on the those American politician sex scandals: that about a wife of a disgraced civil servant (in this case - a State's Attorney) who has to go back to work while the husband is in jail to provide for their two kids. While it's not quite the David E. Kelley courtroom dramas that I've gotten used to, but one doesn't watch The Good Wife for the courtroom action, but what happens outside court.

That said, here's what I like about The Good Wife

• It's nice to watch Julianna Margulies post-ER and Chris Noth post-Law and Order and Sex in the City.
  
• Josh Charles - always a good reason, haha.
  
• The non courtroom drama - the kids hiding the photos and DVDs from their mother, etc etc.

My only snag about the show is that the show is set in Chicago, but filmed in New York. Wherever they're doing the outdoor shots... hello, Chicago is called the Windy City - where's the wind? Chicago winds are pretty blatant whenever Guiliana Rancic does her part of E! News by the Chicago River, but whenever the characters are outdoors, there's no gust of wind. What gives? The 'burbs no wind is it?

That side, it's not gonna stop me from watching the show. Can't wait to see Alan Cumming in the coming episodes.

More ANTM... yay

Another ridonkulous season of America's Next Top Model has started.

Yes, it's campy as usual - Tyra's gimmick this year is her social networking ripoff, MyFiercePage. Was hoping that it'd be Chatroulette, but I kid.

How the heck they picked two girls who got knocked up their first time, another born into a cult... they sure picked people with the more "interesting" backstories, or the outright, batshit crazy ones.

• What the heck is with the arm over the head posing? I'm sure there are other ways you can position the arms in a photoshoot.
  

• Tears during the makeover?- check.
  
  
• Didn't need to see Ms J shave the new girl's 'pits. Seriously.
  
  
• Don't mind the "twists" that they threw in this round - adding the final contestant to the mix at Madame Tussauds New York with Perez Hilton?
  
  
• If you've at least made it to semi finals before, Tyra will pick you in the season's cast - For example, Angelea.
  
  
• Trust fund babies will not get far, even if your godmother is Cybil Shepard.
  
  
• First photoshoot of the season, which happens to be a nude photoshoot next week - check. Always fun to see who balks.
  

Biggest Loser Asia finale

Waited one and a half hours for the so-called live broadcast of the Biggest Loser Asia season finale on the Hallmark Channel, which took place right here in Malaysia last night. (Word was it got delayed that long was because of blackout in the studio, or something to that effect). So the finale was in essence, pre-taped. That was the first downer. I guess it's a good thing that I never got tickets to see it in person :P

I also didn't expect the show to be 2 hours long, which is stupid in retrospect (as the American ones are about as long), but still.

Sarimah introduced the former contestants, who have been pimped up good for the finale. They claimed to have lost all that weight since they got the boot, but you couldn't tell as they still looked the same to the naked eye (half of them are at least 2/3 their starting weight). I'm pretty sure that Garry's second proposal to his wife on camera wasn't totally unplanned in advance, but it wasn't a bad one.

I don't really have anything to say about Bob and Jillian's Skype appearance other than, I didn't know they gave a shit.

As each of the finalists finally broke through the paper, I knew that Aaron (the Malaysian finalist) cannot possibly win because he pretty much looked the same size he was when he left Malacca. Of course you can't miss Sarimah's crack about him having the shortest commute to the finale. Martha the HK chick also didn't stand a chance, even if she spent all that time before the finale training in Thailand with Tony and Garry. And to be fair, she was also about the same size :P

The finalists' video packages were entertaining - trust the wives to make it more so. It was funny when Carlo's wife asked what happened to her teddy bear cos she now has an action figure, haha.

In the end, the real battle was between the Philippines and Indonesia with Carlo and David, which seems pretty close until David burst through the paper and I was like, "oh shit - the guy was so manorexic, he wins for sure", albeit looking worse than Carlo, who's still healthy looking.

The major downer for me was David winning the cash and the car (I wonder if they're actually shipping it to Indonesia?).

He looked so gaunt and scary there's no way that how he got there can be healthy. Quite frankly, I can't wait to hear that he's put back half the weight later down the road and when he finally gets back to work because he took leave to train 8-10 hours a day (which is not realistic) at the gym before the finale. Out of all the finalists, Carlo was the only one that didn't take a leave of absence from work for the finale and made the most of his limited gym time. Good man. I'm not the only one who wanted Carlo to win.

Speaking of Malaysians, the only Malaysian that won anything on that finale was one of the at-home contestants Zenny, who won USD12,000, as well as her trainer, who got a trip to Gold Coast, Australia (Air Asia for sure) and $1000 spending money. Nice.

Au revoir, nip/tuck

It seems so long ago when I started watching nip/tuck and watching the last few seasons feels like a chore, so I'm a little glad that the show stopped at Episode 100, enough for syndication.

It was so funny that their last patient was an aged Japanese porn star who died (like I didn't see that coming) doing what he loved... pun sorta intended.

I thought the loose ends tied up nicely, namely

• Liz is finally made partner in the practice - McNamara/Troy/Cruz, but...
  
• No more McNamara/Troy
• Julia and the kids going to London - oh thank goodness...
  
• Matt ends up with tranny Ava with his daughter Jenna - does the guy really not know that Ava used to be a dude? I could've sworn he knew back in the day and was okay with it.
  

It was so funny that the show ended up sort of like how it started - Christian picking some chick up at a bar, with him telling her that he's a plastic surgeon. I admit, it wasn't the greatest show finale, but it could also be a lot worse. My pet theory ending was that they'd end up an old gay couple together, but that's how Boston Legal ended, so...

nip/tuck is like that friend you had in elementary school that you used to hang out with all the time back then, but then you don't really keep in touch afters and that died a natural death without proper closure.

More Biggest Loser Asia thoughts

Much as I like watching The Biggest Loser Asia as it first comes out on the Hallmark channel, it's also fun to see the conversation happening on the Facebook Fan Page - both good and bad.

I've haven't been watching the American one since each episode is two hours long. But at least I know they're 2 hours long plus commercials. The hour and 15 - 20 minute per episode of TBLA is a little odd and a little annoying - they can't even fix on the length of the show. If it wasn't for the ads, they could really trim it down to an hour.

But I have to agree with some posters that it was sweet revenge to see David crying after having to vote off one of the former Blue team because the last Red Army guy standing Carlo was Biggest Loser of the week. (He looked the part, too.)

I usually root for the Malaysian contestant in these regional versions of American reality competition shows, but I also go for the underdog in the show. Of course it would be nice to see the last Malaysian standing (Aaron) win, but we'll have to see how it goes.

There's contests giving away tickets to see the finale in Malaysia, one of the first is the one on Hallmark Channel Asia Facebook fan page where you had to make a guess (when it was still 6 - 7 people left, so it's anyone's game lah really) as to who would make the finale. I made my guess, but I have to wonder: would they give locals the free accommodation and spending money? LOL.

Hmm.

Saw most of the year's Golden Globes. Ricky Gervais as host - not too bad, I guess.

Asia Uncut Season 2

After watching some of the first season, I wasn't totally expecting Asia Uncut to get a second season. So I totally didn't know that the new season started tonight...

At least there's been plenty of changes to the show since last season:

• Change in location (he's moved to Shanghai, hence taping's done there).
• New house band.
• Set's more streamlined and not as cheesy as the one from last season, almost American network late night talk show standards. The niggling thing I had about it was Jon's new desk is the same as Conan's current desk on The Tonight Show. Shit you not. Pay attention to the desks used on both shows.
• Jon's not so sweaty looking.
  

Also checked out the website for the new season. If I was them, I'd get the web guru over there to do a spellcheck because some of the celebs' names are spelt wrong.

Leno, Conan and NBC - WTF?!

NBC don't want to spend money on scripted dramas five nights a week, so they got Jay Leno (who just left The Tonight Show after 17 years) in for his own 10 p.m. talk show before The Tonight Show.

Now that NBC finds that idea a bust, they have no idea where to put Leno and want to put him back at 11.30 p.m., which is Conan's current slot.

Dude, if you want to retire, then do it properly, not do a Michael Jordan. Sheesh.

Last heard that Jay will do a half hour talk show before The Tonight Show and Conan might get the slot between The Tonight Show and the Late Night show. Major WTF.

What I think of The Biggest Loser Asia so far

Been watching The Biggest Loser Asia (TBLA) on the Hallmark Channel, here are my two cents (too many) on the show so far to mind dump.

• I like that the contestants are non-famous people to begin with - and I was sure they were gonna that celeb that we saw in the auditions through. Can't exactly say the same about TARA.
  
  
• Country representation amongst the contestants leaning towards the Singaporeans and the Filipinos with about 4 from each country. But I'm hoping for the best of the Malaysian contestants, Aaron and Nadia, on the show.
  
  
• Trainers are not too bad, but Kristy the Red Team trainer is getting her butt kicked by her own team members due to their own self-destruction...
  
  
• "Secret location" my ass - as far as we know, they're somewhere in Malacca and nearby A'Famosa Resort. They could be at said resort for all I know.
  
  
• The product placement is a bit the obvious: the reward excursions seem to be at (again and again) the A' Famosa Resort or somewhere like that. Also not forgetting the time Kristy was plugging/explaining the biggestloserclub.asia site to the contestants.
  
  
• Challenges so far not terribly memorable.
  
  
• Too many trips to the hospital/medic/other medical problems. Dang.
  
  
• There's nothing more symbolic of Malacca than the trishaw. But a 200m trishaw race? Really? It ended so badly for the red team when the Indian woman broke the bike chain and the trainer (who was supposed to cheer them on from the passenger side) ended up pushing her big ass back to the finish line. Major WTF.
  
  
• I've no idea whether Sarimah is trying to be nice, serious or a bitch. Or just schizophrenic, haha.
  

David Tennant - From Doctor to lawyer

Can't be arsed to watch Doctor Who (found the Tennant exit/regeneration scene on YouTube), but at the same time glad that David Tennant's gonna do a Hugh Laurie and try his luck on American TV in the NBC pilot, Rex is Not Your Lawyer.

From what I've read about the plot - the show is set in Chicago and Tennant plays a lawyer who's so crippled by anxiety he has to coach his clients on how to represent themselves in court.

Unfreakingbelivable.

With NBC being known for late night talk shows and Law and Order, there's no telling how long it'll last, but it won't stop me from watching.

I can't wait.

Things I like about....The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson is the off-beat talk show to watch amongst the other network talk shows. The show may be on late at 12.35 a.m. (American), but thanks to a hardworking soul who's been uploading the show on YouTube, you can catch up whenever, where ever. Its popularity on YouTube has been noted more than once on the show. Compared to the other late night talk shows on TV, this one's the shiznit.

• The puppets
• How the man manages to entertain despite the lack of band, lights or sidekick.
  
• Craig's "stream of consciousness" rant-y monologues.
• Hilariously lame ass sketches and impersonations.
  
• The hilarious interview segments - more so when he's got fellow Scots on the show. Seriously. (Check out the one with Ewan McGregor or Gerard Butler).
  
• The kitty in the closing segment - the farting, babushka, Ghost Rider cat.... Mr Mimbles (I think)
• His power outage can be news on CNN.

Thoughts about Castle So Far

Finally got around to watching Castle (would watch it on Astro, but couldn't because it's on at 8 p.m...). Basic gist of the show is about a "famous" mystery writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion, guest spot regular on other shows), who finds new inspiration in hot NYPD detective, Kate Beckett (Stana Katic, who was in Quantum of Solace) after killing off his main character. So he got the mayor (a fan and friend) to get him attached to Beckett for "research" during the pilot episode where the crimes are copied out of his novels.

I think I found my new favourite ABC show since Boston Legal.

• Out of the "non-cop consultant/cop" procedurals, this reminds me of Bones (and not to mention countless others), and okay, The Mentalist to a point.
  
  
• Loads of pop culture references - always fun when you manage to catch one. Reminds me of NCIS.
  
  
• Beckett has an interesting and colourful collection of coats.
  
  
• "When are you gonna learn? I got a guy everywhere" - Castle, S0204.
  
  
• I remember the ah ma (Castle's mother) her from Dharma & Greg, playing Greg's tight-laced mother. At least the girl playing his daughter is also about the right age - enough with the twenty-somethings playing teenagers already.
  
  
• I find myself distracted by Stana Katic's eyes... and the eye-makeup. Just because.
  
  
• Love Castle's customised "Writer" bullet proof vest.
  
  
• The guy's daughter more mature than her parents AND grandmother? Hilarious! Love the family scenes.
  
  
• I couldn't tell whodunit half the time because of the twists and red herrings - either I'm getting slow or the writing's not run of the mill procedural.
  
  
• Is it just me, or are the cold opens in the second season run a little longer than normal? On top of the intro, dead body and all before the title screen...
  
  
• Have I mentioned that the show is freaking hilarious?
  

Robin Williams - Weapons of Self Destruction

Saw Robin Williams doing an actual HBO special, Weapons of Self Destruction, that was recorded in Washington, DC.

Never seen the guy in a stand up situation, so it was a first for me. One and a half hours of serious funny.

His impression of a raccoon is freaking hilarious.

His bit on his heart surgery was also entertaining - "...instead of a valve, they gave me a tiny vagina" - LOL.

You should catch it if you can.

Top Chef season finale

• Padma's baby bump was showing.
  
  
• Some firsts: the Voltaggios are the first sibling cheftestants to make it all the way to finals.
  
  
• Finding out who won (before actually watching the episode) was a little meh - it was like finding out that Hosea won not that long ago: A case of WTF.
  
  
• You can be eliminated for under- and over-seasoning food.
  
  
• I probably should've read some of the blogs on the Bravo site, but there are too many people blogging about the show on there, I don't know who's to read....
  
  
• Douchebag winner's shed tears, LOL.

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List

I finally caught up on that Bravo reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List on YouTube when someone else reuploaded the last few seasons on there. I forgot how mostly funny it was as she tries to get out the self-declared "D-list" by whoring herself to various media outlets to get more recognition to climb that ladder.

I was up to early Season 3 when the previous channel got suspended, which is why once you find the channel, you have to pretty much be watching as fast as you can before it gets taken down. Season 3 was mostly about Kathy bouncing back from her divorce and getting back on the dating scene. i.e. dating other famous people just to get in the magazines. Season 4 was about her attempts at getting a Grammy for Best Comedy Album (which she lost to Carlin's final recording, It's Bad For Ya) and also featured Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak with whom she dated for awhile.

Thankfully, whoever runs the particular YouTube channel is also uploading episodes of the current season, with the guy du jour so far being former MADtv cast member Michael MacDonald as an unofficial part of Team Griffin (her assistant Tiffany, tour manager Tom and her mum, Maggie).

She also has a web presence on Facebook and Twitter, though from watching the show I doubt that she's the one doing the updating.

I'm glad that the show is renewed for another season.

nip/tuck - Alexis Stone II

I think a first in the series where they have the same patient two episodes in a row.

Anyway, great episode - like it used to be.

Only part of the show I didn't care for was the Matt-the-prison-bitch angle. But you have to give them props for thinking up of the chemical castration angle instead of giving Matt the boob job (the what-if scenario in Christian's head did not help one bit).

The custody battle gone south (because the new husband's a pedophile) brought out a chuckle in me. Didn't expect Gilles Marini to last a couple of episodes. But sniffing and jacking off into your new wife's granddaughter's panties? Hmm... At least bitch grandma threw him out and didn't go through with the case

Anyway, Julia's parting revenge on her mother (you have to admit) was pretty cool - planting a half kilo of cocaine (which Sean wanted to plant on the new Italian dude earlier in the episode, but didn't) in her mother's luggage was pretty sweet.
